The history of Ketchikan dates back to 1883. This was when Mr. Snow built a salmon salutary. A few years' later a businessmen from Portland, Oregon, hired people to investigate the possibilities for building a salmon cannery on the banks of Ketchikan Creek. In the early 1900's a salutary and general store were opened up. With the fishing trade expanding, Ketchikan was definitely in business with a population of 800. By 1900 Ketchikan was officially incorporated.

Ketchikan is salmon capital of the world and a Mecca for sport fishermen and naturalists alike. During the summer months, the town is enjoyed by visitors from all over the world. Ketchikan has a population of 14,500 and is built along a steep hillside, with sections of the town built right over the water on pilings. Ketchikan has a variety of Native art and a large selection of totem poles, which make Ketchikan essential for all who are interested in Native Culture.
